About the Artist
~ Olivia Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah
The Eastern philosophy of Taoism and the natural landscapes of Utah and the Western United States deeply inspires my work. Taoism teaches that two halves create a whole; both sunlight and storms are essential to balance and harmony in the universe.
I primarily use acrylic paint and oil paint, and incorporate organic materials into my work as well to embody the energy of the landscapes, embracing bold earth tones to capture the dance of light and shadow across horizon lines. My intention is to evoke the feelings one experiences while gazing at diverse landscapes and to reflect the symbolism of animals and nature through a minimalist approach. My aim is to create a sense of zen, simplicity, peace, and calm through the color palette. The use of wood provides a natural, stable foundation, enhancing the organic feel of the pieces. These works make wonderful wall décor or thoughtful gifts.
Nature is art dancing across our eyes. As the earth changes and shifts, so do we. "Sunyata," derived from the Buddhist concept of emptiness within form, signifies that from emptiness, all forms arise. Sandstone is sculpted by wind and rain; flowers and trees thrive from snowmelt and sunlight. Animals carry messages of wholeness and symbolism: the snake sheds its skin in a cycle of death and rebirth; the polar bear symbolizes protection and warmth in winter; the moth embodies transformation and evolution. Nature accepts me in my rawness, reminding me that I too am a process unfolding. It is a reminder of our connection to a greater whole, where every part of our humanity contributes to our collective evolution.
The seasons and natural cycles show us that everything has a role, a place, and a purpose in the grand scheme. From destruction comes creation. We are beautiful in every state of being—nothing ever truly dies; it simply changes form. We can appreciate all things that rise and fall, like the sun and moon. My artwork aims to represent this eternal cycle and interconnectedness.
